Sanding sheet grit sizes – from fine to very rough structures
Sanding sheets are used for sanding metal and wood products, polishing surfaces or cleaning machinery. The grainage is usually indicated on the abrasive’s back. The sanding paper is available in the regular corundum, semi-friable corundum, high quality corundum or silicon carbide versions.
On MioTools.co.uk we offer sanding sheets of many different grainages: starting with roughly grained sanding sheets (G16 – G36) for removing old paint, varnish or wallpaper remainders. The abrasive also helps in straightening out uneven surfaces and can be used for basic sanding of parquet floors. G36 – G80 grain types can be used for initial rough sanding of wood.
Sanding sheets of the fine G100 – G180 grain type are used for fine sanding of rough wooden surfaces and for preparing waxing and oiling procedure of parquet floors. Very fine grain types from G220 upwards are ideal for polishing primed, varnished or oiled surfaces.
As a general rule: the higher the number, the finer the grain type and the smoother the sanding result. The more uneven the work piece is in the beginning, the rougher must be the sanding sheet’s required grain type.
Tips & tricks for home handyman
- Never sand wood crossways, but always follow the fiber course or the fibers will break.
- If you use a very fine grain type, varnish adhesion could later be too feeble.
- Pay attention to the right perforation size of the sanding sheet. This diminishes the sheet’s erosion speed by nearly 30 percent.
- In case of strong dust development, always wear protection glasses during sanding and provide for sufficient dust protection in general. The Ultranet® developed by MENZER allows for efficient dust particle free sanding in combination with an industrial vacuum cleaner.
